Linen & Air Freshener Spray

Witch hazel, distilled water, a few drops of essential oil. Pillows, curtains, and rooms that need a small lift, without anything that came out of an aerosol can.

Why this recipe

Aerosol air fresheners are mostly fragrance dissolved in solvents and propellants. They mask odors but they leave residue on every surface in the room and they are rough on people with asthma or fragrance sensitivities. Witch hazel is a clean carrier that helps essential oils dissolve into water without leaving a film. The result smells like the oils you chose, not like a chemistry experiment.

What you will need

2 tablespoons witch hazel (alcohol-free is fine)
1/2 cup distilled water
15 to 20 drops total of essential oils. Some good combinations:
- Lavender + bergamot for bedrooms
- Eucalyptus + lemon for bathrooms
- Sweet orange + cinnamon for kitchens (use cinnamon sparingly)
- Lavender alone for nurseries (low dilution)
A clean 4 oz or 8 oz spray bottle, glass preferred

How to make it

Pour the witch hazel into the spray bottle first. The witch hazel helps the oils mix with water; if you add water first, the oils sit on top.
Add the essential oils. Drop them directly onto the witch hazel and gently swirl.
Top with distilled water.
Cap and shake gently. Shake again before each use, since natural mixes separate over time.
Label the bottle with the date and the oils used.

How to use it

For linens (pillows, sheets, curtains, sofa cushions, fabric headboards), hold the bottle 8 to 12 inches from the fabric and mist lightly. Let dry for ten minutes before laying down on it. For air, mist into the center of the room toward the ceiling and let the cloud settle.

Safety first

Pet safety matters. Many essential oils are toxic to cats and dogs. Avoid tea tree, pennyroyal, wintergreen, pine, citrus, eucalyptus, and ylang-ylang in homes with pets, especially cats. When in doubt, use lavender at low dilution or skip the oils and stick to plain witch hazel water.
Patch test fabric first. Spray a hidden corner of the curtain or pillow and let dry to check for staining. Most fabrics handle this fine but darker dyes can react.
Avoid spraying directly on people, pets, or food preparation surfaces.
Keep away from open flame. Witch hazel that contains alcohol is flammable.
Pregnancy considerations. Some essential oils are not recommended during pregnancy. Check before using if applicable.

How long it lasts

Use within two months. The oils degrade over time and the spray loses its punch. Two months is also plenty long for a 5 oz bottle to get used up at a reasonable pace.

The honest note about "freshening"

This spray adds a pleasant scent. It does not eliminate odors at the source. If a room smells stale, open a window. If the carpet smells like dog, the dog needs the carpet shampooed (not just sprayed). Use this for a small lift, not as a fix for an underlying problem.
